To say that the Yeezy Boost line, created by adidas and Kanye West, is very popular is an understatement. The sneakers, specifically, sell out within seconds after they’re released. But one pair of sneakers was unique from the others that have been released so far.
Yeezy Boost 950
Yeezy Boost 950 Duckboot had a different style than the other Yeezy sneakers. Included in the Yeezy Season 1 fashion line, the shoes hit stores and became available to online shoppers on October 29th. The shoes were available in four colorways; chocolate, moon rock, peyote, and pirate black and boasted a boot-type construction.
The date of release was also appropriate considering that the shoe is a boot and is meant to be worn during the colder, winter and fall months/seasons. Because of this, the shoe’s upper is cordura, as well as waterproof (appropriate for snow). The shoes also boasts suede detailing and a gripped sole for traction. Furthermore, the colorways were a bit more on the basic side and feature a black build, which is ideal for the colder seasons. Basically, it was a duck boot made with rugged materials meant for harsh weather conditions; unique in the Yeezy line.
What’s interesting is that when the shoe was released it was the most expensive out of all the Yeezy Boost sneakers, and still is to this day. The shoe was priced at $585. However, it wasn’t the most expensive shoe that Kanye West released. That credit goes to his collaboration with Louis Vuitton.
Unfortunately, and as always, when the 950 Duckboot was released, critics weren’t very kind. For example, a very well-known and respected fashion critic, Cathy Horyn, discredited Kanye’s Yeezy line. She stated that if this line was released by an unknown designer, no one would run to the stores to buy it. She also referred to people that did buy the boot as designer fools. Other critics have referred to Kanye’s Yeezy line as unoriginal and have stated that the pieces that make up the Yeezy 950 are of questionable quality. Furthermore, because of these materials, the 950 was described as being overpriced, oversized and consisting of, “…mostly ballistic mesh and rubber…”
Despite some of the negative reviews, and high price of the shoes, fans still ran to the stores to get their hands on a pair. What else would you expect?
One fan was very impressed with how the shoes protected his feet in the snow. Because of the effective construction, he was able to walk through a blizzard to get food. The shoes weren’t destroyed and his feet were kept dry. Take that fashion critics!
So, what can we take from this? Most likely, fashion critics will always bash Kanye and his designs. However, considering the sales and how popular the Yeezy line is, I’m sure he’s upset for about five seconds, but then gets over it when he sees how big the sales numbers are.
