The End of an Era: Eastbay Closing Down with a 70% Final Sale

By January 12, 2023Sneaker News

Eastbay Closing Down - AIO BotSo far, the Year of the Rabbit has been stock-full of all kinds of surprises. It seems that we aren’t completely done with the chaos of 2022. However, we’re still going to manifest good fortune this year, regardless of what happens. And so, the news of Eastbay closing in 2023 definitely came as an ugly shock!

Eastbay is part of the Foot Locker family – aka, Footsites. The sneaker and sportswear retailer is completing a merger with Champs Sports that started back in 2019. But, after more than 40 years in the game (founded in 1980) and 25+ years with Foot Locker, it’s bittersweet. It holds a dear place in the hearts of many sneakerheads in the industry. But, it wasn’t a sudden decision.

In fact, Eastbay closing is the end of a very lengthy process of combining Champs Sports and Eastbay back in 2020. The merger of the two brands under one unified name and logo created Champs Sports x Eastbay, in 2021. The duo brand was supposed to focus on a younger market and drop joint releases. But, this didn’t last long.

Eastbay Closing Down - AIO BotNear the end of December 2022, Foot Locker released a statement announcing the Eastbay closing. Apparently, the business decision is “a result of efforts to optimize distribution processes in order to serve their nationwide customers more efficiently and effectively.” Here’s the thing, Eastbay was popular for its print catalogs announcing the latest drops and release calendars. Which, obviously, became obsolete now. And, the shift to a more digital approach was not enough for Eastbay to pull through.

“We’re saying goodbye to Eastbay at the end of December 2022” – Eastbay said about the closure.

But, that didn’t exactly happen. Instead, Eastbay will now run until January 13th, 2023 – one day left. After this date, all customers will be redirected to the Champs Sports website instead.

The Eastbay closing will result in 210 employee layoffs. Also, the shutdown will apparently go down in two parts: they will let go of 160 employees on the 30th of January, and the remaining work until the end of April 30th.
