What is Amazon: The Realistic Retail Review

What is Amazon? And no, we aren’t talking about the rainforest. We’re talking about the TITAN of eCommerce platforms that dominates the retail industry. 

Although it may seem like a pretty obvious question with an even more obvious answer, there are TONS to learn. And, if you’re looking into making money on Amazon, you’re going to need to know more about the platform. You can’t go into anything blindly! Here’s what you need to know about it:

WHAT IS AMAZON?

Amazon started from a guy’s garage!

In 1994, founder Jeff Bezos started Amazon.com in his own garage in Seattle Washington. However, at that time it was called Cadabra! Could you imagine if this article was about Cadabra and not What is Amazon? Also, it began as a simple online bookstore that started out with the sale of the book: “Douglas Hofstadter’s Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought”… long title. A few months later, Jeff announced the launch of the platform.

Fun Fact: Jeff Bezos decided to change the name from Cadabra to Amazon only after a lawyer misheard it as “cadaver”. Not very sales-y.

What is Amazon Service?

In 2005, Amazon launched Amazon Prime – a membership-based service for their customers. It offered free two-day shipping within the U.S. and streaming, shopping, and reading benefits. You can become a Prime member for $14.99 per month or $139 per year. 

In 2006, Amazon also launched the Amazon Web Services (AWS) starting with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and Simple Storage Service. Which includes some of the BEST sneaker servers! And, they also launched Unbox – a cloud computing and video-on-demand service. So, this makes you wonder, what is Amazon NOT doing?

Because, later in 2007, it also launched its very first Kindle eReader that helped users browse, buy, and read eBooks. Very much in tune with the meaning behind its name!

Fun Fact: Apparently, Bezos opened up a dictionary and looked through the words beginning with the letter A. Why? For alphabetic placement, of course. And then, he chose it because of the Amazon River – one of the biggest rivers in the world. Something he wanted for his own company, “get big fast”.

Amazon’s Product Debut

Later in 2011, everyone was thinking: what is Amazon going to do next? Well, that year, it debuted its very first tablet, the Kindle Fire. Also, two years later in 2013, it started its online Art Marketplace for fine arts. It featured lots of famous artwork including Claude Monet and Norman Rockwell. Then, in 2014, it launched its Fire TV Stick as part of its streaming media devices. 

And, it just kept going! In 2015, the question of the year was: what is Amazon Alexa – one of the greatest breakthroughs in technology? Ever since then, it has expanded to an endless number of products and services – even acquiring an organic grocery store! 

It has literally become the EVERYTHING store.

MAKING MONEY ON AMAZON

Now, we don’t care about what IS Amazon as much as how to make money on it! It has become the hub for a lot of retail sellers AND resellers. So much so that it has become a target to a lot of retail bots on the market!

The pandemic made it all the more competitive and difficult to buy things off the platform. Most particularly, hyped and limited-edition items. This includes things like GPUs, gaming consoles, trading cards, and more! Therefore, part of becoming a reseller is owning a super epic bot for the job!
