This legendary story begins 34 years ago in Trieste, Italy where young Micheal Jordan was playing for the Nike exhibition game. Now MJ is one heck of a savage basketball player, we all know that. But most people, even those who don’t care about basketball, know MJ for his dunks. And not just ANY dunk, THE dunk. The dunk that ended up with a shattered backboard and glass raining all over the players. The destroyed backboard moment was an epic part of basketball history. But up until recently, it wasn’t as known as it should be! That is why Nike wanted to keep that memory alive.
And so, Nike Air Jordan 1 Shattered Backboard began and continues in 2019.
Jordan 1 Retro Shattered Backboard – 2015
In 2015, Jordan came up with the Air Jordan 1 Shattered Backboard and the Air Jordan XXX1 in an unusual non-OG colorway. This colorway was a huge nod to MJ’s uniform during the 1985 basketball game that started it all. It was a whole new level of originality. This came to a little while after Kanye West wore the Air Jordan 1 in Bred to the 2011 fashion week. This made it socially OK to wear sneakers with whatever the hell you want and make a statement.
So it’s safe to say that these sneakers did pretty well! They were limited quantity, insanely high quality and had a cool backstory! What more could you ask for?
They have copped off shelves in no time, and then flipped for up to a thousand dollars after that!
Apparently, they were so limited that each retailer got only one pair for each size!!
It was released again in 2018 in a satin version for women!
Air Jordan 1 Shattered Backboard 2.0 – 2016
This Jordan was called the Reverse Shattered Backboard when they released it back in 2016! And to no one’s surprise, it was an instant hit.
Jordan 1’s are usually best-selling sneakers of all Jordan brand sneakers either way. To add to the awesomeness of these sneakers, there was a factory error that debuted an upside-down swoosh on one pair which was sold for $146,000 USD! Insane!
The reverse part of this colorway is due to the fact that MJ actually played for both teams during that 1985 game!
Women’s Satin Shattered Backboard – 2018
in 2018, Jordan Brand changed things a bit. They went full-on fancy and shiny with a women’s exclusive Satin AJ1 shattered Backboard. The clean version dropped in May of last year and was a huge step from Nike towards expanding the sneakers industry.
Air Jordan 1 Shattered Backboard 3.0 – 2019
A trilogy? The legend of the shattered backboard continues on.
The 3.0’s sport some crinkled patent leather which kinda mimics shattered glass? Nice one Nike!
Slightly different colors than the other SBBs too! It sports a starfish orange colorway with pale vanilla soles!
Release Date: October 26th, 2019
Retail Price: $160
Colorway: Black – Pale Vanilla – Starfish
It’s safe to say that these kicks are probably going to be as limited as the previous iterations, if not MORE limited!
So you better cop yourself a pair because resale is already looking promisin’ with pairs being sold for almost 500$ on reselling platforms like StockX! They got their sneakers right, Jordans always make you big bucks off resell!
But hey! If you don’t feel like waiting, you could always cop yourself a different sneaker coming up sooner this October. The Air Jordan 6 Travis Scott is coming up soon! So you better get yourself a powerful sneaker bot to cop a pair or 2. Preferably one with great success on previous Jordan releases like AIO Bot.
Oh! Did you know that Shaq O’Neal shattered a backboard too! Didn’t get a sneaker out of it though.
