February 11 was a big day in Yeezy Sneakersdom. The 11th is when Kanye West released his new Yeezy 350 Boost line and his new album in an event at Madison Square Garden. The show sold out in 10 minutes on Ticketmaster.com. As if the buzz wasn’t enough already, West heightened Twitterverse by offering a free pair of Yeezy’s and tickets to Season 3 to the person who can guess the name of the album. He’s made it a little easier by providing the acronym T.L.O.P. As of early morning Feb. 9, there were over 28,000 retweets and over 51,000 likes of the offer.
He further stoked the anticipation by tweeting sneak(er) previews, all-white and taupe colored versions of the 350 Boost. FootwearNews.com says: “The uppers of the sneakers look like they’re done in an updated knit that’s slightly different from what we’ve seen in past releases”. Early returns on those were over 21,700 retweets and over 39,000 likes.
The left side of another photo shows a portion of a neon-green 350, which FN says might glow in the dark. Then, there’s the “sandal” with a clear strap and Lucite heel. A sock with a light blue top and white bottom with orange stripes on the back of the sock makes you wonder if the sandal should have a sock. While it has over 4,400 retweets and over 12,200 likes, it did generate responses like “we may want to send this one back to the drawing board”, “what are those?” and “reminds me of the jelly sandals I used to wear in the summer as a kid.”
You can’t win them all, but it’s still creating hype
There are usually a limited number of sneakers sold at each release, but these celebrities haven’t had a problem securing the Yeezy 350 Boosts in the past: Jada Pinkett Smith, Justin Bieber, Rumer Willis, Kylie, Kendall and Kris Jenner, Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Los Angeles Laker Nick Young, Corey Gamble, Bella and Gigi Hadid, Travis Scott, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Victoria Beckham, Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Kano, Big Sean, Joe Jonas, Alexander Wang, Lorde, Tyga, Miguel, Fabolous, 2 Chainz, Lewis Hamilton and Ellen DeGeneres.
West gave President Obama a pair of 350s and 750s, but no word if the Commander-in-Chief has donned them yet.
How much are Yeezys?
At the end of 2015, the size 11 gray 750s, which were the first to be released in 2015, were selling on eBay for $20,000! Black 350s and 750s and new release tan 350s had price tags of $10,000. No wonder FN name it the Shoe of the Year. Consignment sites like Flight Club and Stadium Goods offer a limited selection ranging in price from $1,200-$4,000. The retail price is $200.
For the last release, Adidas opened its app, Confirmed, to take preorders in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, but the app had to shut down after 10 minutes due to the demand. Retailers offered raffles to buy a pair.
Then, there’s the AIO Bot, from Another Nike Bot. The bot is an Add to Cart program that allows sneaker lovers to get limited releases. It works with The Yeezy Store web site. Crashes are avoided because the bot is not an extension. Among the features are product search, multithreaded, auto retry checkout, auto credit card or PayPal checkout without using a browser, express checkout when using a browser, retry on failure, and email/SMS notifications.
