“THE NBA CAN’T STOP YOU FROM WEARING THEM”. This was Nike’s motto driving the campaign for the OG Jordan 1 Rebellionaire. AKA the Air Jordan 1 BANNED that heavily inspires a lot of Jordans – including this release! The spirit of the rebel continues on in all the Air Jordans and every new colorway that the Jordan Brand releases.
However, of all the Air Jordans releasing in 2022, the Air Jordan 1 Rebellionaire channels the BANNED colorway the most! If you don’t know the story behind the BANNED colorway, then listen up!
The story goes that Michael Jordan got a $5,000 fine from the NBA back in 1985. This was every single time he wore the Jordan 1 BRED that broke the league’s dress code. They literally banned the shoes from the league, stating that the black and red shoes “were prohibited”. Of course, Nike saw an opportunity and capitalized on this to create a LEGENDARY story. They even went on to create a commercial solidifying the REBEL mindset!
IS IT ALL A MYTH?
A lot of people claim that the true rebel that MJ wore to the NBA was the Nike Air Ship. This means that the BANNED sneaker is not technically the Air Jordan 1 Bred. But, Nike obviously likes their version of the story better! However, Jordan did wear the Bred colorway during the 1985 Slam Dunk Contest.
Of course, this marks one of the most memorable moments in Michael Jordan’s career. And since he was wearing the Breds, they instantly became unforgettable! So, ultimately, this makes the new BANNED-inspired Jordan 1 Rebellionaire all the more coveted!
